Salah converted with a Panenka; Egypt's four takers all scored, Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed. Egypt's first knockout-stage win in World Cup history.

How Argentina got here: Argentina 3–2 Cape Verde (AET) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on July 3. Lionel Messi opened the scoring (extending his all-time World Cup scoring record); Deroy Duarte equalized; Lisandro Martínez restored the lead from a corner; Sidny Lopes Cabral levelled again; Cristian Romero's extra-time header from a Messi corner (deflected in off Diney Borges) won it.

🚆 MARTA — the fast, cheap airport-to-stadium option

MARTA rail runs directly from inside the ATL domestic terminal to downtown. From Airport Station, take the Red or Gold line north to Five Points (~15 min), transfer to the Blue or Green line one stop west to SEC District Station (formerly GWCC/CNN Center, renamed December 2025). SEC District is the closest MARTA stop to the stadium. Total airport-to-stadium: ~25–30 min including the transfer.

• Fare: $2.50 per ride — tap-to-pay with a bank card, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, or a $2 Breeze Card. Limited-edition FIFA World Cup Breeze cards are available at station machines.
• Match-day trains run every ~5 minutes. Standard weekday hours 4:45 AM – 1:00 AM.

🚗 Rental cars

ATL's consolidated Rental Car Center is a free 5-minute SkyTrain ride from the domestic terminal (all major brands on-site — Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, National, Budget, Alamo, Sixt). Reserve in advance — rental pickups around World Cup match days are up ~40% and inventory is thinning. Skip a car entirely if you're staying downtown; MARTA covers airport, stadium, and downtown for $2.50 a ride.

Driving from Seattle? ~2,600 miles, 38+ hours of drive time. Not realistic for a single match — fly.

Three logical bases: walkable Centennial Park District (0.1–0.5 mi to the stadium, highest match-day pricing), Midtown Atlanta (best for Muslim families — 5–7 min drive to Al-Farooq Masjid, one MARTA stop to the stadium), or Gateway Center at ATL Airport (single-seat MARTA ride to the stadium, cheapest, best for in-and-out trips). Downtown match-day rates are running $250–$600/night for 3–4 star, with stadium-adjacent luxury (Hotel Phoenix, Signia, Ritz-Carlton) at $700–$1,900+.

🌍 Clarkston (East African / Somali cluster)

About 15 mi east of downtown; often called "the most diverse square mile in America." Halal spots concentrate on N Indian Creek Drive. Cuisines skew East African/Somali/Ethiopian more than Egyptian/Levantine — Hawa (Kenyan-Somali) and Bilal's Market (fresh halal meat) are the notable names.

The closest major mosque to Mercedes-Benz Stadium is Al-Farooq Masjid in Midtown, about 1.5 miles north — one of the largest masjids in the Southeastern US, with Arabic khutbah at Friday services. Note that July 7 is a Tuesday — no Jumu'ah conflict on match day. The 12:00 PM ET kickoff falls before Dhuhr (~1:43 PM), so Dhuhr and Asr both fall during or right after the match.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium — tournament-branded "Atlanta Stadium" — is on the west edge of downtown, next to Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia World Congress Center. The roof will be closed with A/C on: interior ~72°F (22°C) regardless of the 90°F+ outdoor heat. Gates open at 9:00 AM ET (3 hours before kickoff); parking lots open at 8:00 AM ET.

• Post-match zones: Zone 1 — GWCC Bus Lane C (~10-min walk from Gate 1); Zone 2 — Broad Street between Trinity and Mitchell (South Downtown, best for Gates 2–4 and airport/I-20 access, ~10-min walk).
• Expect heavy surge pricing before and after kickoff. Walk 10 minutes clear of the perimeter before requesting.

🌡️ Heat and humidity — the #1 thing to plan for

July in Atlanta averages a 91°F (33°C) high with lows around 72°F (22°C). Relative humidity 69–76% — one of the highest levels of the year. Heat index commonly hits 106–111°F (41–44°C). Cairo-summer heat, but with much more humidity than Egypt.

• Mercedes-Benz Stadium is climate-controlled with the roof closed — inside is fine. The risk is outside: parking walks, Fan Fest, downtown crowds.
• Bring the one allowed sealed 20 oz water bottle. Hydrate before security.
• Light-colored, loose, breathable clothing (cotton/linen), sunscreen, and a hat.
• Expect near-daily afternoon/evening thunderstorms (July averages ~4.7 in / 12–17 rain days). A compact umbrella (under 33 in) or light rain jacket helps.

💵 Sales tax & tipping

• Atlanta sales tax: 8.9% (4% Georgia state + 3% Fulton County + 1.5% City of Atlanta + 0.4% special). Prices on menus/tags do NOT include tax — added at the register.
• Grocery cold food is exempt from the 4% state portion but still subject to local taxes (~4.9%). Restaurant/prepared food is fully taxable at 8.9%.
• Tipping: 18–20% pre-tax for sit-down service (same as Seattle/Dallas). Parties of 6+ often see an automatic gratuity — check the bill before adding more.

🚘 Driving culture and safety

Atlanta highway driving is fast and aggressive — the "Downtown Connector" (where I-75 and I-85 merge through downtown) is one of the most congested stretches in the US. Rush hours: 7–10 AM and 3:30–6:30 PM. Use Waze or Google Maps in real time.

• Vehicle break-ins are common in Atlanta. Do not leave any valuables (bags, phones, passports) visible in a parked car. Always lock and use garages or attended lots downtown.
• Rideshare or MARTA is generally easier than driving downtown on match day — especially with road closures around the stadium.

• Buford Highway (Chamblee/Doraville) is Atlanta's densest halal-food and Middle Eastern grocery corridor — the practical hub for Arab-community meals.
• Alif Institute on Buford Highway is the main Arab cultural organization — has been hosting community screenings this tournament (RSVP required).
• Zabihah app is the most reliable community-verified halal listing for Atlanta.

💳 Cash vs card

Atlanta is heavily card-based — Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay work virtually everywhere including MARTA (Breeze mobile). Mercedes-Benz Stadium is 100% cashless.
